Message from JoAnne:

As many of you know, I've been using this wheelchair for the last 25+ years due to a spinal cord injury resulting from a fall. While I have many blessings in my life, I would love to have the opportunity to be free of shooting nerve pain, stand on my own again and maybe even walk. What I want even more than that is for NO ONE else to join this club that I'm in. What I want is for newly injured people to have treatments available that will prevent the devastating paralysis resulting from SCI.

Soon after I got hurt, I had the opportunity to visit The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis facility at the University of Miami's School of Medicine (the most comprehensive spinal cord injury and brain injury research center in the world). I was able to meet other people from around the country that were dealing with devastating injuries. There was talk of research and lab work and promising results, but no human trials. Time passed, more research was done, new discoveries were made, many hurdles were cleared and, in 2012, The Miami Project received approval by the FDA to begin a Human Clinical Trial on SCI injured individuals in the acute/newly injured phase. In 2015, The Miami Project began working with chronic (long term) injuries, and have received feedback of very positive responses already from these Schwann Cell Transplantation surgeries. There are many approved trials for spinal cord and brain injuries happening now at The Miami Project.
